Mark Winkler has developed an enduring affinity for the great Bobby Troup. While perhaps best known for his spirited standard “Route 66,” the legendary singer, pianist, tunesmith and master lyricist left behind a deep and wild treasure trove of quirky/playful and heartfelt/melancholy songs from which Winkler has gotten his kicks since releasing Mark Winkler Sings Bobby Troup in 2003.
Having discovered new overlooked gems in the Troup canon, the singer pays homage to his kindred spirit once again on I’M WITH YOU.
It becomes abundantly clear that Winkler’s voice is perfectly suited for Troup’s material. With his easy going baritone, Winkler takes the listener on this swinging journey in a jaunty hip style aided by frisky scatting. – Audiophile Audition by Pierre Giroux
West Coast Cool vocalist Mark Winkler adds another hip album to his already strong catalog…Clean, sharp and as pressed as the best suit you can find in the Garment District.
– JazzWeekly by George Harris
The songs and Winkler are a perfect match, with the singer delivering the humor and color of the songs wonderfully… a tremendously well-crafted and joyous recording.
– The Jazz Page by D. Glenn Daniels
Mark’s tribute to Bobby’s work is absolutely the coolest and hippest I’ve ever listened to (& believe me, I’ve listened to 100’s of vocalists who attempt this feat).
– Contemporary Fusion Reviews by Dick Metcalf
Winkler may still aspire to Troup’s songwriting, but he’s already surpassed him in terms of vocal prowess. Not only that, few singers have as much fun as Winkler does. You can hear it. – Making a Scene by Jim Hynes
Whether one is familiar with Bobby Troup—or Winkler, for that matter—I’m with You is an enjoyable way to invite these two gentleman along on one’s listening journey. There may be little of the original Route 66 highway remaining. However, I’m With You is a superb companion to take on a long ride. Superb all-around.
– All About Jazz by Nick Mondello
Sheer masterpieces… Winkler’s style is easy and laid back, bright and breezy as he motors west….Throughout, the various combos swing like crazy – piano, B3, sax, guitar they all have their say and they say it good although there are tender moments too.
– Bebop Spoken Here by Lance Liddle
Knowing exactly how to approach these songs with just the right amount of implicit cool without ever wavering into hipster territory, Winkler comes across as Troup’s song’s best friend. A completely exquisite release…
– Midwest Record by Chris Spector
Winkler wowed his audience by simply being his warm, personable, engaging self. He possesses a splendid vocal instrument that can cover a variety of styles. One might compare him to Jack Jones, Perry Como. He deserves without question to be among the greats.
